Chapter Thirteen: Hunted
For several seconds, nothing happened, and Khaldun continued staring at his reflection. He was about to give up when finally, his own image grew dim and Nomad appeared in the foreground.
âKhaldun,â he said with a grin. âI wondered when I might hear from you.â But then his expression became grim. âWhatâs wrong? You look terrible.â
Khaldun told him everything that had happened.
âIâm sorry we made you go through this. I wish I could have gone in your stead.â
âNobody forced me to goâI volunteered, remember? But Iâm afraid I donât know what to do now. Iâve failed. Henry has taken the artifact and Mira.â
âYou should try to get to the university anyway,â Nomad suggested. âGiven the situation in Roses, going through Perrin and approaching from the west would indeed be your best move. Alert them to the situation that has developed.â
âBut they wonât get involved, will they? Donât they have to remain neutral?â
âThings have become dire. With Henryâs acquisition and his army encroaching on their southern border, it is possible they will choose to act. But there are also agents in the field who do not represent them in any official capacity, but do what they can to resist Henry. If they can alert some of those people, they may be able to do something.â
âAll right. I should get moving, then,â said Khaldun. âIs there anyone in particular I should notify?â
âFind Enigma. He was my mentor when I was there, and heâs one of the governors. Heâll know what to do.â
Khaldun nodded.
âGood hunting,â said Nomad. âAnd⦠be safe.â
âThank you.â
Getting to his feet, Khaldun felt a stab of pain in his left calf; heâd almost forgotten about his wound. He packed the mirror, and then sat down again to get a closer look at the injury. The cut was deep and still bleeding. Retrieving his water canteen, he cleaned it out the best he could. Next, he pulled a clean shirt out of his pack and ripped off a strip to use as a bandage. Examining his work, he knew he hadnât done a great job, but it would have to do.
Khaldun mounted his horse and set out, leading Oscarâs mount alongside his own. Returning to the road, he headed north, making sure he and the horses were invisible, and keeping to the grassy area on the shoulder.
When he reached the village, he led the horses out into the field again to avoid making contact with any of the townspeople. North of the village, he moved into the woods and found the trail theyâd taken on the way south.
Khaldun took a rest at lunchtime to eat and check his wound. The bandage was saturated with blood. Removing that, he ripped off two more strips from his shirt. One he tied around his leg above the wound as a tourniquet; the second he used as a bandage. The blood loss was worrisome, but he didnât know what else to do to stop it. He finished the water in his canteen, and drank some from Oscarâs.
